Setting up a skewer: threat (1)

In this lesson you will learn how to prepare a skewer by means of a threat. As you know, by a threat you can think of attacking a piece, a mate threat, or threatening to promote. In Example 1 we look at attacking a piece and in Example 2 we look at a promotion threat. In both cases, a skewer is prepared.

What do you have to do?

Create a threat and prepare a skewer. Then, win material with a skewer.

With 1.Kc2!, attacking the rook, the only move that does not immediately lose material is 1...Ra3. However, now king and rook are on the same diagonal. White takes advantage with 2.Bf8+ (a skewer). Note that flipping the moves is not wise here. Indeed, after 1.Bf8+ Kd5 2.Kc2, Black can cover the rook just in time with 2...Kc4.
